Volkswagen repairing reputation after emissions scandal

OLEAN (May 11, 2016)–Volkswagen may be minimizing the damage caused by their recent emissions scandal.

The U.S. Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit in January against Volkswagen for violating the Clean Air Act by installing devices that sensed when the car was being tested and helped the car meet admissions standards.

John West, president and CEO of J & R Auto Inc., said he is confident Volkswagen will rebound from the fallout of the emissions scandal.

James Rohl, a Volkswagen owner from Wisconsin, said he is happy with his two cars even though both were affected by the emissions scandal. Rohl, who owns a 2011 and a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta, said Volkswagen gave him a $1,000 cash payment per car and $1,000 for each car’s service at a Volkswagen dealer.

Maggie Morris, director of the Franciscan Center for Social Concern at St. Bonaventure University and an active environmentalist, said she is disappointed in Volkswagen after hearing about the emissions scandal.

“Any one of us if we don’t take our cars in for inspection obviously have to go through some legal consequences,” Morris said. “In an ideal world, [Volkswagen] would have to put money into developing affordable ways to make cars more efficient that we could work into other technology rather than putting government money into that. I think that would be a very appropriate way to reconcile the situation.”
